What this site keeps.
I count visits so I know what people read. I built the counting myself so it records as little as possible and nothing that points back to you.
What is recorded for each page view
- pageThe page you opened, without the query string. The exception is utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, which say which newsletter or post sent you.
- sourceThe site that linked you here, as a domain name only: google.com, not what you searched for.
- countryYour country, from the two-letter code my host attaches to each request. Not your city or your IP address.
- devicePhone, tablet or computer, plus browser and operating system names without version numbers.
- readingHow long the page was on screen, how far down you scrolled, and three loading-speed measurements (LCP, INP and CLS).
- clicksClicks on links to other sites (the domain only), on a few marked buttons such as copy email, and when a page was not found.
What is not recorded
- deviceNo cookies, local storage or anything else saved in your browser.
- addressNo IP address or full browser identification string. The counting code never stores or logs either one.
- othersNo fingerprinting, ad networks or third-party scripts. The data stays in my own database and is never shared or sold.
- tomorrowNo way to connect your visit today with a visit tomorrow.
How visits are counted without knowing who you are
To tell one visitor from many, the server mixes your IP address and browser string with a random key that only exists for one day, and keeps the first 16 characters of the result. The IP address and browser string are thrown away straight after. The key is deleted once the day is over, so nobody, me included, can turn the result back into an address or connect today's visit to tomorrow's.
How long it is kept
Page views and clicks are deleted after 13 months. The daily keys are deleted after a day.
Opting out
If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, nothing is recorded at all. Known bots and crawlers are not counted either.
